Amherst Ballet accepts all children regardless of ethnic background, religion, or weight. Scholarships are available for qualified low-income families. We consider the training of ballet to be a vehicle by which we teach discipline, focus, taking directions, accepting corrections, and giving the children confidence to not only perform, but to become responsible citizens and leaders who are supportive of the arts.
It is the aim of the Amherst Ballet to train the body first in ballet to instill control and discipline and then apply these techniques to other forms of movement. We try to train the complete dancer by high school graduation who is willing, cooperative and adaptable to all styles of dance that any choreographer will require. Our dancers are known for this ability, and choreographers love to work with them.
Although our aim is to train professionally so that each dancer is prepared for a professional career in dance if they so choose, we are proud of the fact that most of our dancers choose to further their education. Dancers get into outstanding colleges and universities and incorporate dance in some way into their lives forever. We are an academic community of five colleges and continuing one's education is primary with most families. Nevertheless our alums have proved themselves in the dance world in such companies as Merce Cunningham, Omaha Ballet, the Greater Houston Civic Ballet, Charleston Ballet Theatre, Hoechster Ballet (Germany), Ballet Contemporain de Bruxelles, Delia Stewart Jazz Company, Luis Fuente's Ballet Company (Spain), Rachel Lampert Company, Mixed Company (New York City).
